✈️ Great News for Travelers Planning to Drive in Sri Lanka
Visitors arriving in Sri Lanka can now easily validate or obtain their International Driving Permit (IDP) directly at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.
This new facility, established by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) in collaboration with the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT), aims to simplify the process for tourists who wish to rent and drive vehicles during their stay.
What This Means for Travelers
Previously, visitors had to visit AAC offices in Colombo to get their IDP approved for local use a process that could take several hours.
Now, with this airport-based service, arriving travellers can:
Validate their international driving licence within 15–20 minutes after landing.
Present their passport, valid foreign driving licence, and International Driving Permit (IDP).
Pay a small administrative fee.
Receive immediate approval to drive legally anywhere in Sri Lanka.
This change is expected to make car rental much easier and faster for tourists arriving through Colombo.
A Step Toward Better Travel Convenience
Sri Lanka’s tourism industry continues to recover strongly, with a growing number of independent travellers choosing self-drive options to explore the island’s scenic routes and cultural landmarks.
